La Banca Europea per gli Investimenti (BEI) è una banca per il credito a medio e lungo termina stata creata dal Trattato di Roma del 1958 come banca di prestiti a lungo termine dell’Unione Europea.
Art. 158/159 of the Treaty:
«… the Community shall aim at reducing disparities between the levels of development of the various regions…»
and «… shall also support the achievements of these objectives by the action it takes through the structural funds…, the European Investment Bank and the other existing financial instruments»
La BEI è di proprietà degli Stati Membri (apporto iniziale di capitale sui bilanci pubblici)
Opera con strumenti del diritto privato
E’ l’istituzione finanziaria della Comunità
Il compito della Banca è di contribuire attraverso l’integrazione, allo sviluppo bilanciato e alla coesione economica e sociale degli Stati Membri dell’Unione Europea.
