Different sources, especially World Bank, IFC and GEM



The Global database includes information from various sources and is available upon request.
The countries selected and included in a database are those for which data on various measures of entrepreneurship are available from different sources and especially World Bank, International Financial Corporation (IFC) and Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM).

Variables available for the database:

  • Measures of Insurance

    • Insurance penetration,
    • Insurance density,
    • Premium for life and non-life

  • Measures of Entrepreneurship

    • Start-ups, new firms, micro and small and medium companies, firms formally registered when operations started (% of firms), new businesses registered (number), total businesses registered (number), workers' remittances and compensation of employees.
    • Entry Density
    • MSMEs
    • MSME (Micro, Small, Medium Enterprises), Participation in the Economy, (in the IFC MSME Database)
    • MSMEs per 1,000 people
    • MSME employment % total.

  • From the Full GEM datasets for 1999 - 2007 Data to include:

    • Established Business Ownership Rate - Percentage of 18-64 population who are currently owner-manager of an established business, i.e., owning and managing a running business that has paid salaries, wages, or any other payments to the owners for more than 42 months.
    • Nascent Entrepreneurship Rate - Percentage of 18-64 population who are currently a nascent entrepreneur, i.e., actively involved in setting up a business they will own or co-own; this business has not paid salaries, wages, or any other payments to the owners for more than three months.
    • Necessity-Driven Entrepreneurial Activity: Relative Prevalence - Percentage of those involved in Total early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) who are involved in entrepreneurship because they had no other option for work
    • New Business Ownership Rate - Percentage of 18-64 population who are currently an owner-manager of a new business, i.e., owning and managing a running business that has paid salaries, wages, or any other payments to the owners for more than three months, but not more than 42 months
    • Total early-stage Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) - Percentage of 18-64 population who are either a nascent entrepreneur or owner-manager of a new business.
